In Guinea, power cuts during Ramadan in Kankan, provoked protest movements there. The local supplier, however, claims to have sent equipment to strengthen the service to the country’s second city.

In Guinea, Kankan, the country’s second city, has been the scene of protest movements since the weekend of March 25-26, 2023. Protesters denounce the lack of electricity in the city where Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya is, the current president of the transition.

The management of EDG, the Guinean energy supplier, claims to have sent equipment to strengthen Kankan’s electricity supply. But according to the dissatisfied, the load shedding continues.

Two successive breakdowns caused cuts

This is not the first time that Kankan has protested against load shedding. The electoral stronghold of former President Alpha Condé has been displaying the same demands for a few years. Last week, the general manager of EDG traveled there with two new groups, to reinforce the dilapidated equipment of the city’s power station, with the commitment to supply energy from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., from the beginning of Ramadan.

This weekend and at the beginning of the week, two successive breakdowns caused cuts. Short-term cuts, according to the supplier, but which were enough to mobilize the inhabitants of several neighborhoods who occupied the crossroads and burned tires in the evening, as well as the portrait of President Mamadi Doumbouya.
