The establishment of an interim administration for Tigray, Ethiopia’s northernmost region, is a crucial step in carrying out a peace plan to end the war there, according to the Prime Minister’s office of Ethiopia on Thursday.

Getachew Reda has been appointed as the head of the interim government, according to a statement on the official Facebook page. The Ethiopian parliament’s upper house created the interim administration.

A peace agreement to stop the war in Tigray was signed in November in South Africa by the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). This agreement included the establishment of a transitional administration for Tigray.

When tens of thousands of people were slain and millions were evicted from their homes, the battle came to an end with a truce that was signed in Pretoria last November.
