On Tuesday in Abidjan, the Regional Organisation of Cotton Interprofessional of the Member States of the Economic and Monetary Union of West African States (ORIC-UEMOA) was created.

This organization brings together cotton professionals from Senegal, Burkina Faso, Togo, Mali, Benin, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Its objective is to defend the interests of cotton stakeholders to better organize them and share best practices. It is designed to reflect the opinions of all stakeholders in the sector.

This organization will also have the task of relaunching activities after a large part of the production was affected by the jassid pest. Sharing experiences is essential to fight against this pest which undermines the efforts made over the years for cotton production, said the president of ORIC-UEMOA.

The UEMOA zone produces an average of two million cotton seeds and 900,000 tonnes of cotton fiber each year. The organization would like to set up a quality label for West African cotton.
