Experts believe that Beijing has taken advantage of the vacuum left by the withdrawal of Western countries and decided to invest in infrastructure.
Anna Borshchevskaya, from the Washington Institute, a think tank, finds that these investments come at a price that African countries have to pay, noting that African countries can fall into a debt trap.
The American expert explained that if a country does not repay its loan, China takes control of its strategic assets.
Russia, meanwhile, is strengthening its presence on the continent through mining projects awarded to the private paramilitary group Wagner.
In January, the US accused Wagner of “widespread human rights abuses and extortion of natural resources” in Africa. These accusations were reiterated by the European Union, which imposed sanctions on the group in February.
