On Monday, the German pharmaceutical company BioNTech dispatched six mobile vaccine production units, referred to as BioNTainer, to Rwanda. These units, constructed from recycled containers, represent the initial shipments of their kind to the African continent. Upon their arrival, the units will be assembled to establish a vaccine production center, which will facilitate the manufacturing of vaccines for various diseases.

The aforementioned shipments, which are composed of units constructed from recycled containers, represent the first of their kind to be dispatched to the African continent. Upon arrival, these units will be assembled in order to establish a production center dedicated to the manufacture of vaccines aimed at combating various diseases.

BioNTech’s chief operating officer, Sierk Poetting said this is a historic moment, explaining that this technology can move anywhere.

The African continent depends on imported vaccines. Indeed, according to the continent’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), less than 50% of the continent’s 1.2 billion people are fully immunized against Covid-19.

Rwanda will be able to distribute the vaccines to all 55 member countries of the African Union.
