The Senegalese Abdoulaye Bathily, head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, announced at a press conference in Tripoli that it will be possible to reach an agreement on the electoral laws by mid-June.

Abdoulaye Bathily assured that this proposal was not imposed from abroad, to prevent accusations of foreign interference by political actors in Libya.

Similarly, the diplomat said that if the timetable is respected, it will be possible to hold the elections this year.

Abdoulaye Bathily had already declared last month a new initiative to break the deadlock in Libya.

Due to persistent differences between political actors, the presidential and parliamentary elections, originally scheduled for December 2021, have been postponed.

Calling for fair elections, Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeibah expressed on his Twitter account his support for Bathily’s efforts in this regard.
