During his State of the Nation Address, President Cyril Ramaphosa’s declaration of a state of disaster has raised concerns among opposition parties that it may create opportunities for corruption similar to what was observed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Auditor-General Tsakani Maluleke has stated that her office is currently developing a plan to monitor the state of disaster-related to the electricity crisis. While discussions with relevant stakeholders have already begun, the Auditor-General’s intervention is still a work in progress.

Maluleke welcomed the opportunity to monitor public money during the electricity state of disaster but emphasized that her office’s intervention would be determined based on identified risks and available resources.

It is important for provincial treasuries and departments to participate in identifying any irregularities, just as they did during the flood disaster, according to Maluleke’s statement.
