At Least 36 Individuals Allegedly Killed by Islamic Extremists in a Town in East Congo

According to a local official and the leader of a civil society organization, suspected Islamic militants attacked a community in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo throughout the night and killed at least 36 people.

According to the reports, the attackers are considered members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an armed organization from Uganda operating out of the eastern Congo that has sworn allegiance to the Islamic State and frequently conducts fatal raids on villages.

The village of Mukondi, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of the city of Beni in the North Kivu region, is plagued by rebel activity and has been governed by the military since 2021 to restore order, was the target of the raid.

Furthermore, At least 30 people were slain in the incident, which started on Wednesday evening, according to provincial governor Carly Nzanzu Kasivita’s tweet from early Thursday.

Mumbere Limbadu Armand, the head of a neighboring civil society group, reported a preliminary death toll of 44, including women, children, and elderly people, and added that some villages were still unaccounted for.
