In a press release issued on Saturday, the European Union (EU) announced that it would provide humanitarian assistance to North Kivu, the troubled eastern province of Congo, by releasing 47 million euros (49.97 million dollars). As part of its preparations, a flight with food and medical supplies will be dispatched to the troubled province.

Janez Lenarcic, The European Commissioner affirmed that “To help humanitarian workers fulfill the needs of the people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the EU is prepared to mobilize all available resources, including aviation and logistics”.

A statement from the same source stated: “With this Humanitarian Air Bridge operation conducted with France’s support and the new money mobilization, we reaffirm our commitment to the most vulnerable.”.

According To the European Union release, “to bring help, such as food and medical supplies, the aircraft will fly to Goma, the capital of North Kivu. The money “will be routed through humanitarian partners to cover immediate needs like as nourishment, medical treatment, water and sanitation, housing, and protection,”.

For the past year, insecurity in the vast, unstable east of the country in central Africa has risen dramatically, largely as a result of the M23 rebel group’s significant resurgence.
