Nigeria’s presidential candidate Obi, who came third in the February 25 election won by the ruling party’s Bola Tinubu, announced Thursday that he would take his case to court to challenge the results.

Nigeria’s presidential candidate stated that « We’ll look into every peaceful and lawful avenue we can to regain our authority. We won the election, and we’ll show the Nigerians “During a news conference in the nation’s capital Abuja.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, 70, was declared the winner of the presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) with more than 8.8 million votes, or 36 percent of the vote, following a race in which the opposition alleged “serious” fraud.

The nominee of the All Progressives Party (APC), a former governor of Lagos, will succeed outgoing president Muhammadu Buhari, 80, who has come under fire from all quarters for his appalling record and two mandates marked by a surge in poverty and insecurity.

With 25 percent of the vote, 61-year-old youth favorite Peter Obi finished third, marking the first time in Nigeria’s democratic history that an outsider from the two major political parties finished third. Former vice president Abubakar (29 percent) of the biggest opposition party came in second (PDP).

Although the election was mainly calm, there were significant problems with the computerized transmission of results, which infuriated many voters and opposition parties who assert that the ballots were heavily skewed.
