Authorities conducted an operation in the Sfax metropolitan area, officially aimed at combating illegal immigration and migrant trafficking. This intervention unfolded amidst escalating tensions in the region over the past several weeks.

With armored vehicles, and masked and armed men, some descending from rooftops on ropes to the applause of locals, Tunisian authorities sought to make a striking impression.

The operation resulted in a few skirmishes, around twenty arrests, and the reclaiming of a building from migrants—a success, according to Tunisian authorities. The targeted building housed dozens of sub-Saharan migrants awaiting clandestine passage to Europe.

This marks the latest eviction operation by Tunisian security forces. They are also active in dismantling spontaneous camps that have formed on the outskirts of Sfax, a hub for departures. Deportations to desert regions and neighboring countries—actions that stirred controversy last summer—continue as well.

Struggling with the phenomenon of irregular migration, Tunisian authorities find it challenging to rely on the International Organization for Migration, which is supposed to facilitate so-called voluntary returns to countries of origin but faces cooperation hurdles from some African nations seemingly reluctant to repatriate their citizens.

Hours after the operation, Saïed welcomed his Minister of Interior to the Carthage Palace to commend the intervention, which, according to a statement, was initiated at the request of the Head of State himself.
