Just Fontaine, Legendary Former Atlas Lions Coach, Dies at 89

According to Europe 1 radio journalist Jacques Vendroux, Just Fontaine died on Wednesday at the age of 89, as he announced on Twitter this morning.

Looking back to his career, the International football player Just Fontaine, who was born in Marrakech, began his career with Casablanca before transferring to France in 1953. To lead the Moroccan national team “the Atlas Lions” from 1979 to 1981, and he would go back to Morocco 25 years later.

“I wanted to give back what they had given me. If I was a footballer, it’s thanks to Morocco, ”he assured the specialized media “L’Équipe”.

Member of the France team for the 1958 World Cup, the striker scored 13 goals during this edition. This record made him the top scorer in World Cup history until 1974 when Gerd Müller scored his 14th goal in that edition of the World Cup.
