Ismaïla Touré, The Legend of Senegalese Music, Dies at 73

A giant of Senegalese music is gone. Ismaïla Touré, one of the founding members of the famous musical group Touré Kunda, has passed out on Monday February, 27th at the age of 73. His group, legendary, contributed to the fame of Senegalese and African music in the years 1970-1980.

“Ismaïla Touré was a beloved musician, artist, father, and a friend. He left a lasting mark on the world of music and culture. We are proud of his heritage and all the contributions he has made throughout his life,” said the family of Ismaïla.

Touré Kunda is the first African formation to have succeeded in establishing itself in France in the 1970s, before becoming known abroad. Their music mixed the sounds of the continent with other genres such as jazz or reggae. Ismaïla formed a shock duo with her brother.
