On the fronts of traditional coordination in Africa, Algeria is renewing the involvement of the Sahara issue in its diplomatic deliberations with South Africa, an attempt during the visit of Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra to Pretoria to revive the chances of continued support for the Polisario Front internationally.

It is noteworthy that the Algerian official went to South Africa to meet Nalidi Pandor, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who agreed on the same perceptions regarding the issue of the Moroccan Sahara while awaiting a reading of the regional developments by Presidents Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Cyril Ramaphosa.

Moreover, Algeria is trying to reopen channels of communication and coordination with its strategic ally, South Africa, after the developments in the Sahara issue, so that they share the same obsession related to defending the secession thesis, and working to undermine Morocco’s efforts to guarantee its national sovereignty.

On the other hand, South Africa has been recognized as a phantom republic since 2004 and does not miss any opportunity without siding with the Algerian military regime and adopting its positions. The President of the African country also gave an official reception to the head of the imaginary front, Ibrahim Ghali, at the end of last year.

The two parties agreed to enhance coordination in preparation for the next African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which heralds a sharp clash with Morocco, especially Morocco’s continued coordination with traditional countries within the Union’s organs and the atrophy of the Polisario Front’s presence.
