The death toll continues to rise in the Democratic Republic of Congo, due to the violence against civilians that left five people dead on Wednesday in Ituri.

In the face of this situation, concerns are rising about the progress of the voter registration operations scheduled for this Thursday in the eastern region of the country.

These census operations in preparation for the December presidential elections have already begun since last December in the rest of the country.

The eastern and northeastern provinces of the country, the most affected by jihadist violence, are concerned by these operations from this Thursday.

In Ituri, dozens of deaths are counted each week, because of repeated violence by armed groups such as the ADF (Allied Democratic Forces) and community militias such as Codeco, accused by the UN last Sunday, of having killed twenty civilians.

The locality of Bukima is not spared from attacks by ADF rebels who have killed civilians recently, according to a civil society actor.

North Kivu province is also facing the M23 rebellion, which has resulted in massive displacement of people from their villages due to fighting.

The authorities hope that the voter registration operations will go well thanks to the joint operations of the Congolese and Ugandan militaries against the ADF.
