The International Forum on Climate Change Resilience in Niger opened on Monday 13 February at the Mahatma Gandhi International Center in Niamey. Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Laouan Magagi presided over the opening ceremony on behalf of the Prime Minister.

The forum, which brought together several speakers on climate change, was held under the theme “Historical loss in Niger and its impacts; natural risk management policies; financial management of natural risks; and finally on natural risk modeling” and was organized by the Ministry of Humanitarian Action and Disaster Management and the Niger Cities Modernization Agency in collaboration with the World Alliance for Risk Modelling.

On this occasion, Minister Laouan Magagi said that the Sahel paradoxically suffers from insufficient rainfall and at the same time disasters such as drought and floods due to climate change, which is the main cause.

As a result, several problems related to food security, conflicts, and humanitarian crises are emerging or worsening, the minister continued.

In terms of potential solutions, the minister announced that the government is working with national and international actors to put in place mechanisms and actions to strengthen disaster risk governance, through investment in prevention, warning, and strengthening disaster preparedness.
