More than three months after the peace deal that ended a bloody conflict in the north of the country, the African Union (AU) has called for a “political dialogue” between the Ethiopian government and Tigrinya leaders.

A meeting of senior Ethiopian officials, Tigrayan leaders, and a group of East African countries, was held in Addis Ababa, at the initiative of the senior official of the Peace and Security Council of the Union African Bankole Adeoye.

The peace agreement signed on November 2 in Pretoria, South Africa, provides in particular for the disarmament of rebel forces, the restoration of federal authority in Tigray, and the reopening of access and communications to this region cut off from the world since 2021.

The precise toll of this conflict punctuated with abuses, which took place largely behind closed doors, remains unknown. According to the African Union, this conflict would have killed nearly 600,000 people, would have displaced more than two million, and plunged the population into conditions close to famine.
