In February the United States expressed its anger at Sudan. After the January 30 release of a terrorist sentenced to death, Washington summoned the Sudanese ambassador. Abdel Ra’uf Abuzaid has been charged for his part in the attack that killed American humanist John Granville and his driver, who worked for USAID in 2008.

For many reasons, The Sudanese Supreme Court released Abdel Ra’uf Abuzaid on January 30, 2023. And the US saw red. In its first reaction, the State Department, the US Department of Foreign Affairs, said it was “deeply disturbed by the lack of transparency that led to this decision”, also asking for “clarifications” from Sudan.

But last night, US diplomatic spokesman Ned Price went even further: “We strongly condemn this unilateral release and continue to demand that he be held fully responsible for these murders.
