The commissioner of the Mozambican National Police, General Fannie Masemola indicated, on Wednesday, the commitment of the Mozambican government to work closely with the South African Police Service to combat ongoing border crime, especially vehicle theft.

Mr. Masemola was speaking at a meeting in Hluhluwe with a delegation of senior officers to assess the police response to cross-border crime.

The visit comes after at least six vehicles were set on fire on the R22 national road between Hluhluwe and Mbazwana. This adds to the phenomenon of vehicle theft that has angered residents.

These crimes mainly affect the communities living next to the border with Mozambique. These citizens complain about the lack of action by the authorities to deal with the theft of vehicles.

For this, more than 100 police officers have been deployed in the region since Sunday, including special anti-crime units, the official said.
