The Chadian Minister of Transport and Road Safety, Fatima Goukouni Weddeye, told the media that 20 people were killed and 7 were injured in a road accident that occurred on Friday about 35 kilometers from the town of Oum-Hadjer.

The minister said it was a collision between a public transport bus and a heavy truck, which broke down and was parked on the road. The bus had left N’Djamena for Abeche on the night of 26 January 2023 with 31 people on board.

The causes of the accident, according to the first elements of the police investigation, are the non-respect of road safety rules in case of vehicle breakdown on the road, speeding, overloading of the truck, and the carelessness of the bus driver.

This type of accident is frequent in Chad. Consequently, the Minister called on road users and frontline drivers to be vigilant and respect the texts in force.
