The International Conference on Afforestation and Reforestation (Ciar) opens today in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo. Running from July 2nd to 5th, this initiative gathers numerous experts from across the continent to increase forested areas to combat climate change.

According to the organizers, this conference marks the launch of the Global Decade of Afforestation and Reforestation, an initiative proposed by Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso during COP 27, held in Egypt in 2023. The initiative aims to implement extensive tree-planting efforts to effectively fight climate change, prevent the degradation of habitats for certain animal species, and combat soil degradation.

To kick off this initiative, approximately 2,000 acacia saplings have been planted by experts, civil society members, and various associations at the Bambou Mingali site, located about 50 kilometers north of Brazzaville. This area has been significantly impacted by climate change, with the capital experiencing unusually warm nights during what is typically a cooler dry season.

Over the next three days, experts will engage in discussions and share insights on reforestation strategies. The conference will culminate on Friday, July 5, with addresses from various heads of state, including the leaders of both Congos, Gabon, and Kenya.

This conference represents a crucial step in the global effort to mitigate climate change through afforestation and reforestation, reinforcing the Republic of the Congo’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the preservation of biodiversity.
