South Africa to Deploy Troops to Eastern DR Congo as Part of SADC Mission

In a significant move aimed at addressing the escalating security challenges in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Africa has announced plans to send 2,900 troops as part of its contribution to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) force. The deployment, approved by the 16-member state SADC, is a response to the longstanding instability and violence plaguing the region, particularly in the restive eastern provinces of the DRC.

The mission, scheduled to commence on December 15, 2023, and last for one year until December 15, 2024, is expected to cost approximately 2 billion rand ($105.75 million). The deployment underscores South Africa’s commitment to regional peace and security initiatives, with the aim of supporting the DRC in addressing the threat posed by various armed groups operating in the eastern part of the country.

The Eastern Congo mission, approved by SADC in May last year, seeks to bolster the capacity of the DRC’s security forces in tackling armed groups and restoring stability to the conflict-affected regions. The deployment of troops from South Africa, Malawi, and Tanzania reflects the collaborative efforts of SADC member states in addressing the complex security challenges facing the DRC, which is renowned for its vast reserves of cobalt and copper.

The decision to send troops comes at a critical juncture as the DRC grapples with intensified attacks by rebel groups, including the M23 rebels, whose recent incursions have raised concerns about the security situation in the North Kivu province. The offensive mandate of the SADC force underscores the seriousness of the threat posed by armed groups and the need for decisive action to protect civilians and stabilize the region.

With decades of conflict resulting in widespread violence and displacement in Eastern Congo, the deployment of SADC troops represents a significant step towards addressing the root causes of instability and fostering lasting peace in the region. South Africa’s contribution to the mission underscores its commitment to regional security cooperation and its role as a key actor in promoting peace and stability in Africa.
