KZN Education Department Races Against Time to Restore Schools Hit by Weather

Recent adverse weather conditions in KwaZulu-Natal have once again wreaked havoc, particularly in the northern parts of the province, where nearly 60 schools have fallen victim to destructive floods. The provincial education department confirmed this staggering figure on Friday, placing them in a challenging position as the new academic year looms.

With the reopening of schools just around the corner, the department faces a tight deadline to restore the damaged infrastructure, ensuring a conducive environment for learners and teachers. Muzi Mahlambi, the provincial department spokesperson, highlighted the varying degrees of impact across different areas.

“The total count is 59, with uMkhanyakude District alone having 28 out of that 59,” Mahlambi stated. In response to the crisis, the department is implementing a contingency plan, deploying over 175 mobile classrooms to the affected schools. Ongoing communication with the districts keeps them abreast of the latest developments.

However, concerns linger regarding potential budget constraints within the department, potentially hindering swift actions to address the damaged buildings. As the clock ticks, the education department remains under pressure to restore these essential educational facilities before the imminent start of the school year.
