In the early hours of Monday, an unfortunate incident transpired in a town in western Cameroon, where assailants indiscriminately discharged firearms upon unsuspecting individuals as they slumbered. Tragically, this reprehensible act resulted in the loss of a minimum of 20 lives, as confirmed by a local government official.

Under the cover of darkness, the assailants initiated their assault, igniting houses ablaze in the town of Mamfe. This information was conveyed by the administrative head of the encompassing Manyu division. Mamfe, situated in the South West region of Cameroon, is near the Nigerian border, with a distance of less than 50 kilometers (30 miles) separating the two regions.

According to Viang Mekala, the official spokesperson, seven individuals have been hospitalized as a result of the incident, while security forces are actively conducting search operations in the area. Mekala reassured the public by stating, “The situation is currently managed, and there is no need for the population to be alarmed.”

Armed factions have been responsible for a series of attacks, abductions, and fatalities in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon, which primarily consist of French-speaking communities.
