The ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict has claimed the lives of two South Africans, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) received the grievous news and is actively engaged in the verification process, given the peculiar circumstances surrounding one of the individuals, who reportedly possessed an Israeli ID number.

This devastating turn of events unfolded in the early hours of a fateful Saturday when the militant wing of Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip. What initially began as an alarming escalation soon plunged both regions into a full-blown war. In retaliation, Israel unleashed a relentless barrage of rockets on Gaza, with the casualties mounting steadily, and thousands have tragically lost their lives.

Dirco’s spokesperson, Clayson Monyela, issued a statement conveying the department’s condolences to the families of the deceased South African nationals. He also emphasized that the verification process was currently underway to discern whether there might be dual citizenship or additional complexities at play.

The South African government, via its missions in Ramallah and Tel Aviv, has been working tirelessly to coordinate efforts and provide consular assistance and support to the bereaved families in their time of profound sorrow. The international community watches with growing concern as the Israel-Palestine conflict continues to unfold, resulting in immense human suffering and tragic loss.
