The director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Samantha Power, announced on Wednesday the provision of initial aid worth $1 million for the victims of the Al Hoceima earthquake in Morocco. She affirmed “the United States’ commitment to supporting the efforts of the Moroccan government in this regard.”

In a statement, the U.S. agency indicated that it had dispatched a small assessment team immediately after the earthquake to evaluate the situation and identify humanitarian needs. Based on their findings, initial support was approved to assist organizations already present in the affected areas.

Furthermore, Washington is directly sharing specialized technical expertise with the Moroccan government to bolster its ongoing emergency response efforts. The United States also stands ready to provide additional support if requested by Rabat.

Ms. Power acknowledged the great courage and compassion demonstrated by Moroccans who are doing everything in their power to help their fellow citizens affected by the disaster. She expressed her appreciation for the overflowing generosity and mercy shown by individuals seeking to assist Morocco in these challenging times. She also called for encouraging cash donations to reputable organizations working closely with the affected communities.

It is important to note that Morocco has established a special fund to manage the consequences of the earthquake, accompanied by an open account to receive voluntary contributions and cash donations. These efforts reflect international cooperation and humanitarian solidarity in times of hardship.
