Earthquake Causes Damage to Several Buildings in the Historic City of Marrakech

The earthquake that struck several regions, including the city of Marrakech, has resulted in varying degrees of damage to several buildings in the Red City, especially in the historic area.

According to observations by “Weafrica24,” parts of Marrakech’s historic walls were damaged due to this earthquake. The historic minaret of Koutoubia Mosque in Jemaa El-Fna Square also collapsed.

As a result, residents of various neighborhoods in the city hurried out of their homes, moving away from walls and buildings, amidst a state of panic, fear, and bouts of crying among women and children.

In the same context, the National Institute of Geophysics revealed that the earthquake, which struck several areas at 11:11 PM local time on Friday, reached a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located in the Igil commune, near Marrakech.

The institute further noted that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 8 kilometers, at the intersection of latitude 30.961 degrees north and longitude 8.413 degrees west.

Residents of Rabat, Casablanca, Salé, Fez, Beni Mellal, Agadir, Marrakech, and other areas felt the earthquake and rushed out into the streets, awaiting developments in the coming hours.
