Fifteen deaths were recorded during the celebration of the 129th edition of ” Grand Magal of Touba” in central Senegal. This massive religious event brings together followers of the Mouride Brotherhood in Senegal and around the world in the city of Touba, commemorating the exile of Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba, the founder of the Mouride Brotherhood, in 1895.

The announcement of this toll was made by Captain Ndari Ndour, the officer in charge of communication in the National Fire Brigade, deployed for the organization of the 2023 edition of “Magal Touba Grand.”

Local media quoted Captain Ndari Ndour as saying, “Regarding the toll, since the activation of our operations center at the beginning of September, firefighters have carried out more than 141 operations to rescue over 471 victims of road accidents. So far, 15 fatalities have been recorded.”

In a related context, Serigne Abdou Khadre Mbacké, Chairman of the Culture and Communication Committee of the organizing body of this religious event, which will be attended by a Moroccan delegation, stated that the spiritual city of Touba has received over five million pilgrims and seventeen foreign delegations.

In anticipation of this event, Senegalese authorities have taken a series of measures to ensure the smooth conduct of the Grand Magal Touba festival.
