The persistent wave of killings in the Ukum Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State has reached alarming proportions. The latest reports detail the gruesome murder of six individuals, among them a beer parlour operator and a young man who was on the cusp of his wedding, in the Chito community.

Onslaught in Kaduna

Adding to the turmoil, an armed gang that operates within the region recently set up a roadblock in the Agboki settlement vicinity of the LGA. This move rendered the Sankera-Chito-Vase road completely inaccessible to residents and commuters.

These events follow a series of violent clashes between rival militias in the LGA, which resulted in the loss of nearly 10 lives. Additionally, numerous properties were destroyed and a local market was left in ruins as armed gangs ran rampant.

Deserted Communities

Eyewitnesses have shared accounts of how these circumstances have led to dire consequences. The District Head of Chito community, Tor Ngene, along with the residents, had no choice but to flee to other locations, fearing for their lives in the face of these marauding gangs. The relentless attacks have paralyzed business and commercial activities in the area, casting a shadow over its economic vitality.

One resident shared, “These regions were once hubs of farming, known for substantial yam and food production. However, with the ongoing crisis, agricultural activities have ground to a halt. The uncertainty has forced farmers to abandon their fields, leaving us all in a state of trepidation.”

Over the past weekend, the community was struck by tragedy once again, as six lives were tragically cut short. Among the victims was a young man whose upcoming wedding was just around the corner. In a separate incident, a drinking spot operator fell victim to a gang’s aggression in Chito. Accused of harboring a rival group at his establishment, the operator’s life was taken in a brutal manner.

Leadership and Responsibility

Reacting to the distressing situation, Chief Shima Ayati, a respected figure within the community, voiced his concern and frustration. He squarely placed the blame on the political class, emphasizing their failure to fulfill their responsibilities in ensuring peace and security within the Ukum LGA.

Chief Ayati lamented, “It is deeply unfortunate that we find ourselves in this situation. Following the last elections, representatives from this area were elected to positions of power, including a Senator and a State Assembly member. Yet, it is disheartening that their silence on this matter persists, leaving us without the decisive action needed to put an end to this cycle of violence.”
