Niger: New Jihadist Attack Since the Coup, in the West of the Country

The High Command of the National Guard reported on Nigerian television that six Nigerian soldiers and ten “terrorists” were killed in fighting in the country’s west on August 13th, 2023. A provisional report.

In Niger, National Guard and Special Forces elements were ambushed in Sanam, in the Tillabéri region, on August 13th, 2023.

Nigerien soldiers who were in five vehicles “engaged in pursuit” against suspected jihadists, when they fell into an ambush, about twenty kilometers from the town of Sanam, in the west of the country, explains a communication.

Attacks attributed to armed groups and suspected jihadists increased following the July 26 coup.

Thus, on August 3rd, it was a village near Anzourou, northwest of Niamey, less than 100 km from the Malian border, was attacked, killing at least 5 people, according to an initial report.

The following day, the villages of Wabila and Hondobon, near Kokorou, suffered the same fate, 12 people were killed, according to initial information.

On August 9th, in Bourkou Bourkou, near the Samira gold zone, at least five national guards were killed by “armed bandits”, according to the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP), the military body that currently rules Niger.

Since the putsch against President Mohamed Bazoum, a good part of the army has been recalled to Niamey by the CNSP junta. The reason why it is the national guards who pay the heaviest price during the attacks.
