According to the Ministry of Justice, Franco-Spanish lawyer Juan Branco was released on August 7th, 2023 in Senegal. However, he was put under judicial control and ordered to be expelled from France.

A “huge relief” for his French lawyer Robin Binsard. Juan Branco, who defends political opponent Ousmane Sonko, was arrested on Saturday, August 5th at the Mauritanian border as he tried to leave Senegal in a canoe disguised as a fisherman.

He was being actively sought after for interrupting a press conference held by his Senegalese colleagues. The Senegalese State had issued an international arrest warrant against him for “crimes and offenses” related to the violent events that occurred in June 2023 following the condemnation by Ousmane Sonko.
