DRC: President Tshisekedi Evokes “a Certain Drift” Within the Congolese Catholic Church

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the president denounced on June 25th, 2023, from his electoral stronghold of Kasaï-Oriental what he considers to be “a certain drift observed within the Catholic Church”. A speech that follows the harsh indictment of the Congolese bishops against its governance and the six-month process of general elections in the DRC.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), new tensions between the power of Félix Tshisekedi and the Catholic Church just under six months before the general elections. The Congolese president denounced on June 25th, 2023, from his electoral stronghold of Kasaï-Oriental, a “drift” within the most important religious denomination in the country.

A speech that follows the very severe indictment of the Congolese bishops against its governance and the electoral process which they consider “badly started”.

Invited this Sunday to participate in worship to celebrate the silver jubilee of the bishop of Mbuji-Mayi, the Congolese president did not mince his words. Félix Tshisekedi deplored, “a certain drift observed within the Catholic Church”.

The head of state declared that he would never accept the dangerous drift that has taken hold among some people, which could divide the Nation, especially in this election year.
