With a 2-1 victory over Tunisia in the final, the Moroccan women’s tennis team won the Billie Jean King Cup (Group III Africa) in Nairobi on Saturday.

In the individual competition, Aya El Aouni beat Feryel Ben Hassen 6-0, 7-5, while Yasmine Kabbaj lost to Chiraz Bechri 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles, the Moroccan pair of Malak El Allami and Aya El Aouni sealed victory for the national team by beating the Tunisian duo of Feryel Ben Hassen and Chiraz Bechri 2 sets to 1 (7-6/6-3/6-0).

By winning this tournament, the women’s equivalent of the Davis Cup, the Moroccans have secured their place in the Europe/Africa II Group in 2024.

In a statement to the press, Moroccan team captain Mehdi Ait Barhouch praised the performance of the players, who showed great fighting spirit and concentration, not dropping a single point since losing to Kenya in the opening match.

This exploit is the culmination of a long-term effort by the Royal Moroccan Tennis Federation, which has made basic training one of its priorities, sparing no effort in supporting young Moroccan tenniswomen and tennis players,” stressed the Moroccan coach, praising the Moroccan quartet for their efforts in this competition.
