According to the Malagasy nationality code, the voluntary acquisition of a foreign nationality results in the loss of Malagasy nationality.
The vagueness around the dual nationality of Andry Rajoelina had never been clarified. Social networks have leaked documents attesting to the French naturalization of the Head of State in 2014, prompting increasingly more numerous reactions accusing the President of a lack of transparency since his candidacy in 2018 and calling on him to speak.
The extract from the decree on the acquisition of French nationality by Andry Rajoelina signed by the French Prime Minister and the French Minister of the Interior at the time, as well as the publication in the Official Journal, made the rounds of the social network Facebook.
Exemptions
“The functions of a President of the Republic can only fall to a citizen of Malagasy nationality”, reacted the MMM party of Hajo Andrianainarivelo, referring to article 46 of the Malagasy Constitution. In a press release published Thursday, June 16th, the party of this former Minister of Spatial Planning and Public Works of Andry Rajoelina from 2019 to 2022, asks the Head of State “to speak on this subject which offends the sovereignty of the Madagascans who have been betrayed”.
