Following a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, President Cyril Ramaphosa has refrained from revealing the outcome of discussions regarding the possible relocation of the upcoming BRICS summit to China.

The conversation between the two leaders centered on the African Leaders’ Peace Mission to Ukraine and Russia, with the impending BRICS summit also being a topic of concern. Speculation has grown, suggesting that South Africa may relinquish its hosting responsibilities to address the issue of Russia’s participation.

As South Africa prepares to host the 15th BRICS summit alongside Brazil, Russia, India, and China, this year’s event carries significant weight. Delegates from the bloc will convene to discuss strategies for strengthening political, social, and economic ties among emerging market countries.

However, the preparations have been overshadowed by uncertainties surrounding the attendance of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin is currently wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes, yet the South African government appears unlikely to abide by the ICC’s warrant of arrest.

The details of the phone conversation between Ramaphosa and Xi Jinping regarding the potential hosting by China remain undisclosed. Nonetheless, the Presidency has confirmed that both leaders expressed their commitment to ensuring a successful summit.
