The United Nations has warned that despite the “crucial” progress made by the countries of Central Africa in terms of stability and cooperation, the region is facing multiple crises.

The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Central Africa, Abdou Abarry, told the Security Council that the coming months will mark an important turning point for the region, where crucial political and electoral processes are due to take place between now and the end of the year.

The UN official added that the UN is working to ensure that the episodes of violence that marked the elections are avoided at all costs, asserting that “the peace and stability of this sub-region depend on it”.

Presenting the SG’s latest report on developments in Central Africa since the Council’s last meeting in December, the head of the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA) said that States were making great strides towards achieving the vision of a “region of prosperity”.

Highlighting successes in resolving tensions, reconciliation, and security issues, Mr. Abarry praised the collective efforts of the region’s leaders, from raising awareness of climate change to the fruitful dialogue between Chad and the Central African Republic (CAR).
