Malta considers the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007 as a serious and credible contribution to the political process led by the UN to advance the process towards a definitive resolution of the Sahara issue.

The Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of Malta, Ian Borg, expressed this position during a working visit to the Kingdom. During his talks in Rabat with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, African cooperation, and Moroccans residing abroad, Nasser Bourita, they adopted a Joint Declaration at the end of his visit.

The Maltese minister also reiterated his country’s long-standing support for the UN-led process for a political, just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution for the parties, the statement said.

In the said Joint Statement, Malta encourages all parties to show greater political will for a definitive solution and to recommit to the efforts of the United Nations in a spirit of realism and compromise.

The two ministers agreed on the exclusivity of the UN in the political process and reaffirmed their support for UN Security Council resolutions 2602 and 2654, which noted the role and responsibility of the parties in the search for a political, realistic, practical, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution.
