After almost a year of inter-community violence in Chad, which left more than 100 people dead in Kouri Bougoudi, new violence has arisen in the province of Tibesti, in the far north of the country.

On Wednesday, new clashes pitted the Chadian army against rebels from the National Front for Democracy and Justice (FNDJT), with no independent source able to confirm or deny the clashes.

According to the deputy coordinator of the FNDJT rebels, Youssouf Tolli, it was the Chadian army that launched an attack against one of its forward bases in Dozo, a town some 80 km from the town of Wour in Tibesti province.

Without giving any details of the clashes for the moment, Youssouf Tolli assures us that their fighters managed to repel this “surprise attack”.

For his part, the spokesman for the transitional government, Aziz Mahamat Saleh, confirmed on Thursday that a clash had indeed taken place on Wednesday in the Kouri Bougoudi sector between the army and “the rebels of the FNDJT and the CCMSR”.

Aziz Mahamat Saleh said that “one rebel was killed, 20 others including four wounded were captured, heavily armed vehicles were seized and others destroyed” during fighting following “an incursion from southern Libya”.
