The President of the Republic, Mohamed Bazoum, will today travel to Lomé in Togo to take part in the High-Level Round Table on Fertilisers and Soil Health, organized jointly with ECOWAS and the Togolese Presidency, with the support of the World Bank Group and the International Fertiliser Development Centre (IFDC), under the theme “Cultivating the future by nourishing the soil”.

A press release from the Presidency’s communication unit stated that this meeting comes at a crucial time for seeking strategies and consolidating the gains made in the agricultural sector, especially as the strategy of liberalizing the fertilizer sector, which has been implemented in Niger since 2021, has helped to boost the country’s agricultural production.

Another of the objectives of this round table is to revisit the priority actions relating to the strengthening of institutions and human capacities to ensure the sustainable management of fertilizers and soil health, by setting up soil analysis services, promoting adapted technologies, and creating regional knowledge-sharing networks.

This meeting will produce a roadmap accompanied by a “Declaration of Commitment” to support the implementation of a Ten-Year Action Plan to strengthen the fertilizer sector and improve soil health in West Africa and the Sahel, based on four strategic areas: strengthening sectoral and institutional policies, and access to and use of fertilizers.
