According to official South African police statistics published on Tuesday, nearly three murders were committed every hour during the first quarter of the year in South Africa, a record figure in terms of crime.

These figures were announced by the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, who draws up the sad picture of insecurity in one of the world’s most dangerous countries every three months at a press conference broadcast live on television.

Murders in the first quarter of this year were 3.4% up on the same period last year, with 6,289 cases recorded. However, murders of children fell by 20%, said the Minister.

South Africa records an average of ten homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the World Bank, while Japan is close to zero.

Regarding rape cases in this country, which is sometimes described as the epicenter of rape, South Africa opened more than 10,500 cases in the first quarter of the year, a decrease of 2.8% compared to the same period last year.
