The regional conference on the control of chemical trade in Africa opened on Tuesday in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, and will continue for three days.

Indeed, the definition of a common strategy in the fight against the illicit trafficking of chemical products and weapons on the African continent will be at the heart of the exchanges between the participants of this meeting.

Several African customs officers participated in the meeting, which focused on the role of the customs cordon in cross-border security.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Director General of Customs of the Republic of Congo, Guenolé Mbongo Koumou stressed the need to share experiences and establish regional cooperation between customs officers and other public services such as security and defence services.

In this regard, the official said that this cooperation between customs and other security and defense services should highlight the efforts made by African countries in the effective management of borders and the fight against the spread of chemical weapons.

For his part, the Technical Secretary of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Solomon Haice, said the conference comes at a time when Africa is facing cross-border insecurity.
