In a statement issued at the end of a consultation meeting between members of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) and the President of the Union of the Comoros and AU Chairperson, Azali Assoumani, the two parties stressed the crucial importance of peace, security and stability, hence the need to adopt a multidimensional approach to address the threats facing the continent.

These three principles constitute, according to both parties, the overall framework for the full implementation of the AU’s 2023 theme “Accelerating the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area”.

In this regard, both sides noted the need to address structural factors, root and emerging causes, promoting democracy and further building institutional capacity.

Thus, both sides expressed their intolerance of unconstitutional changes of government, stressing the need for Member States in political transition to respect the prescribed deadlines.

The PSC and the AU Chairperson reaffirmed the AU’s unwavering commitment to accompany the Sudan and its people in the quest for lasting peace, calling on the parties to the armed conflict in the country to cease hostilities without preconditions, open the humanitarian corridor, adhere to international conventions, and renewing their commitment to redouble their efforts to use their good offices, in collaboration with all stakeholders, to bring all parties to the negotiating table.

Furthermore, the PSC and the AU Chairperson stressed the need for collective security, division of labour, robust responses, and a common African voice and position.
