President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Tuesday during the visit of Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong that African leaders are determined to embark on a peace mission to Ukraine and Russia to resolve the ongoing conflict between the two nations.
The decision comes as a result of the significant impact that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has had on food security in Africa. Ramaphosa emphasized that the mission has been spurred on by six African leaders who are committed to finding a peaceful resolution.
Ramaphosa discussed the peace mission idea with Putin and Zelensky in separate phone calls over the weekend, he expressed satisfaction with their positive response and willingness to receive the delegation in both Moscow and Kyiv.
The initiative was tabled on behalf of the presidents of Zambia, Senegal, Congo, Uganda, Egypt, and South Africa. Ramaphosa’s discussions with the leaders showed their readiness to engage with African counterparts and resolve the conflict.
