United Kingdom: Charles III Crowned at Westminster Abbey

Almost eight months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the coronation of Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla takes place on May 6th, 2023 in London at Westminster Abbey.

The big day For the United Kingdom and the entire Commonwealth. Today in London, Charles III, 74, is being crowned since the death of his mother Elizabeth II on September 8th. There will have been only 8 months between the enthronement and the coronation, against 16 in 1953.

Given the tense economic context experienced by the country, the ceremony was intended to be more sober than that of Elizabeth II, 70 years ago. With a reduced number of guests, 2000 guests against 8000, open to civil society, costumes for certain participants (such as judges) rather than ceremonial costumes. But according to figures put forward by several media, the cost of the event would amount to 114 million euros, double that of 1953.
