On Sunday, the Ethiopian security forces arrested 47 suspects for terrorism and plotting to overthrow the ruling regime, in connection with the murder of the leader of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s ruling Amhara Welfare Party.

The security forces stated in a statement that they had found the suspects in possession of weapons, bombs, and satellite communication equipment.

Thus, the statement announced that these suspects planned to take control of the regional government by assassinating senior Amhara officials.

Extremist forces killed party leader Girma Yeshitila and four others in an attack on Thursday as he headed to Debre Birhan, located about 100 km northeast of Addis Ababa.

Amhara nationalists often labeled Mr. Girma a “traitor” on social networks due to his proximity to Abiy Ahmed.

In Amhara, the federal government is trying to dismantle the region’s “special forces”, illegal paramilitary units set up by the authorities.
