In an interview with the French news agency, the director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, Peter Sands, warned that weather disasters in Malawi and Pakistan have increased malaria cases.

He said that in Malawi, Cyclone Freddy was responsible for an increase in malaria cases, as it caused six months of rainfall.

The extreme weather event in Pakistan and Malawi, for example, is evidence of the impact of climate change on malaria, says Peter Sands.

On the occasion of World Malaria Day on 25 April, he pointed out that in these two countries, there has been a dramatic increase in malaria infections and deaths.

He cited the example of Pakistan and Malawi where pools of water left behind are breeding grounds for malaria-carrying mosquitoes.

The official called for action now to combat malaria, which is getting worse due to climate change.
