During a visit to Conakry on Wednesday, Secretary of State Chrysoula Zacharopoulou reiterated France’s readiness to support Guinea in its transition to civilian rule.
The junta, led by Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya, has expressed its commitment to return power to civilians no later than 1st January 2025.
In addition to the West African states, the international community is aware of this commitment.
Apart from the transfer of power to civilians, Ms. Zacharopoulou said that France will accompany Guinea in its electoral process.
To discuss the ongoing transition process, Ms. Zacharopoulou planned to meet with the military in power and representatives of political parties.
Relations between France and West Africa have deteriorated since the military came to power in Mali and Burkina Faso after military coups.
