A virtual meeting focusing on the current crisis in Sudan will be held on Thursday, with the participation of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Chairperson of the African Union (AU), the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, the Executive Secretary of the East African regional grouping, IGAD, and other relevant organizations.

Mr. Guterres’ spokesperson announced that Mr. Guterres had met with Kenyan President William Ruto and AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki, underlining Mr. Guterres’ commitment to securing a 24-hour ceasefire to allow civilians to find safe shelter.

Sudan has been hit by clashes between Sudanese armed forces and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since Saturday.

An initial 24-hour ceasefire was announced on Tuesday but collapsed minutes after the deadline.

The Trilateral Mechanism released a statement calling on the parties to create the necessary conditions for civilians to seek safe shelter, medicine, and food.
