On Monday, April 17, 2023, the Burmese military government announced the pardon of 3,113 prisoners, including 98 foreign nationals, in a press release relayed through Telegram messaging.

Several thousand opponents and pro-democracy activists have been imprisoned since the February 2021 military coup, while protests against the junta have been bloodily repressed, provoking condemnation from the international community.

It is noteworthy that no comment was obtained from the junta and the exact identity of the pardoned prisoners is not known.
