The United Nations has expressed concern about the situation in Sudan following the delay in signing a final agreement to resolve the political crisis in the country.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, called in a statement for the parties to overcome the obstacles to civilian rule.

Turk called on all parties to focus on the common interests of the Sudanese people and to redouble their efforts to restore a civilian-led government.

He added that it is time to put the political transition back on track, knowing that several positive steps have been taken to reach a final agreement.

The UN official also urged all parties to refrain from violence and to overcome obstacles to security sector reform in order to avoid delaying the signing of the political agreement.

Sudan has not had a functioning government since October 2021, when the military dismissed the transitional government of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and declared a state of emergency.
